Healthcare professionals play a significant role in ensuring the wellbeing of their patients. However, the profession's demands can be overwhelming, leading to stress, burnout, and poor patient outcomes. Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion resulting from chronic stress and can lead to decreased job satisfaction, low morale, and a high turnover rate. Burnout can also lead to medical errors, poor patient outcomes, and a lack of empathy towards patients. This article aims to discuss strategies that healthcare providers can use to mitigate stress, prevent burnout, and improve patient outcomes.
The first step in managing stress and preventing burnout is identifying the causes. The healthcare profession is rife with stressors, including long work hours, high patient volumes, administrative tasks, and the pressure to provide quality care. Research shows that healthcare providers experience high-stress levels, with a prevalence rate of up to 80% (Shanafelt, Boone, Tan, Dyrbye, & West, 2018). Burnout is also prevalent among healthcare providers, with a prevalence rate of up to 54% (Shanafelt et al., 2018). The causes of burnout include a lack of control, work overload, and lack of social support.
Strategies for Mitigating Stress and Burnout
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a treatment strategy that involves moving one’s eyes in a particular pattern while processing traumatic and distressing memories, which are common in the healthcare field. This therapy is guided by the adaptive information processing model (Shapiro, 2001) and helps ground the person to the present moment and makes the memory less vivid and distressing.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that helps individuals change negative thought patterns and behaviours. CBT effectively reduces stress and burnout among healthcare providers (Shanafelt et al., 2018). CBT can be done individually or in groups and incorporated into the workplace setting.
Social support is essential in preventing burnout and improving well-being among healthcare providers. Social support can come from colleagues, family, friends, and mentors. A support system can provide a sense of belonging, reduce stress, and increase job satisfaction (Shanafelt et al., 2018).
One of the major causes of stress among healthcare providers is time management. Finding ways to manage time effectively can reduce stress and prevent burnout. Time management strategies include prioritizing tasks, delegating, and setting realistic goals (Shanafelt et al., 2018).
Self-care is a vital aspect of preventing burnout and improving well-being among healthcare providers. Self-care involves taking care of oneself physically, emotionally, and mentally. Self-care strategies include exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and engaging in joy and relaxation activities (Shanafelt et al., 2018).
Stress and burnout are prevalent among healthcare providers and can lead to poor patient outcomes, decreased job satisfaction, and low morale. Identifying the causes of stress and burnout is the first step in preventing them. Healthcare providers can use strategies such as EMDR, CBT, social support, time management, and self-care to mitigate stress, prevent burnout and improve patient outcomes. By prioritizing their well-being, healthcare providers can provide quality patient care and improve the overall healthcare system.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-11
